About the World Federation of the Deaf

The WFD is an international, non-governmental, central organization comprising national associations of Deaf people. It was established in 1951 during the first World Deaf Congress in Rome, Italy, which makes it one of the oldest organizations in the world for people with disabilities.

The highest decision-making body of WFD is the General Assembly. Every Ordinary Member has the right to send up to two delegates to attend the Assembly, which is held every four years in conjunction with the world Congress of the Deaf.

Current Goals:

  • To improve the status of national Sign languages
  • To better the education for Deaf people
  • To improve the access information and services for Deaf people
  • To improve human rights for Deaf people in developing countries
