The Deaf Perspectives on Identity Theft and Privacy project
The Canadian Association
of the Deaf (CAD) is introducing a new project to teach both
providers and consumers about the Internet safety and privacy
rights in regards to deaf and hard of hearing people across
Canada.
The Deaf Perspectives on
Identity Theft and Privacy project, which will run until
February 2010, has two main goals. Firstly, the CAD hopes to
teach business that provide Internet and communications services
about the challenges for Deaf and hard of hearing people when
they try to access information. The project’s second goal is to
teach Deaf Canadians about identity theft, Internet fraud,
scams, and privacy rights and threats.
The project is being
coordinated by Evelyne Gounetenzi, Director of Outreach and
Community Leadership. The CAD hopes to meet the project goals by
running a conference in October for Deaf leaders from across
Canada to discuss their concerns with service providers from
across Canada. From November 2009 to February 2010 the CAD will
host presentations in at least 12 cities from Vancouver to
Halifax that will explain the importance of Internet safety and
encourage lasting partnerships between the Deaf and the service
providers in their communities.
The CAD will post the
information on our website as well as on partner websites.
Reports will be available in English and French along with a
short “best practices” guide and American Sign Language and
Langue des Signes Quebecoise video clips.
