Deaf Employment Paths: National Deaf Job Strategies Project

by Tanis Doe (2000)

The complex nature of the employment challenges facing Deaf Canadians requires significant and coordinated efforts on many fronts. Access to training and re-training, career development and counseling, human services such as interpreting, and technical aids are all needed by Deaf job seekers. This report identifies potential solutions to help Deaf Canadians find, keep, and advance in employment.

Deaf people are not proportionately represented in professional occupations such as lawyers, engineers, doctors and teachers. Tanis Doe's report for the CAD offers guidelines to be used by universities to encourage more Deaf people to become professionals. It also educates post-secondary admissions offices about the accommodation needs of Deaf candidates. (73 pages)

The Politics of Visual Language: Deafness, Language Choice and Political Socialization

by James Roots (1999)

This book is a ground-breaking study of the political socialization of children who are deaf. Debate has raged for years over how to educate the prelingually deaf — those children who cannot acquire language "normally" (that is, orally and aurally). While the battlelines have been drawn by the proponents of oralism versus manualism and their hearing supporters, two linguistic dilemmas facing D/deaf people remain constant: a conscious choice is always made for them as to the way they will be taught, and either method of language acquisition results in a form of marginalization. Professionals will have to reconsider the emotional and political effects of current assumptions about the socialization process. (106 pages)

Multiculturalism and the Deaf

by Evelyne Gounetenzi (1999)

This project examines the challenges facing Deaf people who are members of a racial-ethnic minority. The challenges faced by hearing minority groups are well-known, but the Deaf face two issues: they are members of a minority group because of their race or ethnicity, and they are also Deaf. Where do they get support to keep their culture, and how do they integrate to the Deaf community? These are the main questions that need to be answered. (51 pages)

Parent Information Report: Hearing Parents and Their Deaf Child

by Evelyne Gounetenzi (1998)

Ninety percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents who usually have little, if any, prior exposure to deafness. They must be deliberately and systematically taught language because they lack the medium through which language is normally acquired, i.e. through hearing. This project identifies significant factors in the parental decision-making process and gaps in access to full and balanced information. It also identifies possibilities for ensuring a healthier and more holistic approach to deafness on the part of parents, children and professionals.
